The Maui Aquarium – Maui Ocean Center

“The Hawaiian Aquarium” Maui Ocean Center Aquarium is the only aquarium in the world dedicated to foster understanding, wonder, and respect for Hawaii’s marine life. Located in Maalaea, this 3-acre marine park is the largest tropical reef aquarium in the Western Hemisphere. The Maui Ocean Center Aquarium provides information, tours by marine naturalists and exhibits on thousands of indigenous fish, sharks, turtles, stingrays and other fascinating marine life.

Maui Ocean Center is Hawaii’s Best Aquarium

The Aquarium is one of the few Maui activities that do not require an advance reservation. Sweet, but since you are planning your vacation to Maui, you might as well pencil this in as finding the time after you arrive may prove to be challenging with everything else you have scheduled. Regardless, you should visit the Maui Ocean Center, just because it’s a fascinating experience.
Upon entering the aquarium, like most others, there are smaller tanks which hold some of the more exotic species of marine life. The interesting thing about this exhibit is that most of the fish here are native to Hawaiian Waters. You can’t find them anywhere else in the world, but Hawaii.

The tide pool exhibit is also interesting. This exhibit provides understanding on to how our reefs and tide pools come together to support the life in our oceans. Without either, the marine population would dwindle to nothing. The jellyfish tank is unique. Jelly Fish are transparent. The Maui Ocean Center has installed a black light over the tank which illuminates them.

Sharks and Rays

The main feature of the Maui Ocean Center Aquarium is its one-million-gallon tank that has a tunnel through one side. When you walk into it, the fish swim around you. The tank holds a variety of fish, large and small. There are different types of sharks in the tank also, which is OMG. The tiger sharks are big and scary. I’m glad they are behind the glass.
Schools of different species of marine life swim around the tank and then there are some larger fish that are loners.

The Maui Ocean Center is big on educating the public about everything to do with our oceans, reefs and marine life. They conduct special tours and lectures sharing the habits, conditions, and challenges that face our ocean environments in Hawaii and throughout the world. Most lectures are held at the main tank inside the building. There are schedules posted all over the aquarium, so maybe you can check one out while visiting.

The Aquarium also has a logo store. It’s basically the way out. There are many unique items available for purchase. The first time I visited the Maui Ocean Center I was surprised at how big the store was. It’s huge. Bigger than most shops in Lahaina and stuffed with toys and souvenirs waiting for you to buy for gifts to take home.
Maui is not known for being friendly to your wallet. In most cases, activities on Maui have children restrictions that tend to make them family unfriendly. The aquarium is one of the few activities on Maui that you can enjoy at your leisure for time and family that has no guidelines or restrictions. Your kids will be happy, and so will you.

My wife and I came here on our vacation to see the different aquatic life, and the whale exhibit. The beautiful fish, and corals were amazing to see up close, and the shark tunnel was really awesome. We had two stingray swim right over our heads; it's amazing to see their size up close. Then we went to see the 3D whale show, and holy cow, that was the most amazing thing my wife or I had ever seen. We both teared up during the show because it was just so amazing and realistic. We felt like we were actually swimming with the whales. We showed up fans of whales, we left feeling like we had a deeper understanding of whales, like we got a glimpse at their world. We both now absolutely love whales, and we both wish we could have watched that show over and over. It was so cool. My wife has said more than once that "this was a life changing event." And I totally agree.

Absolutely do not miss this place! What an amazing experience in the sphere- a 3D movie experience. You feel like you can touch the whales in the movie! Tons of great other stuff to see too! Many viewing stations under ground and even a glass tube you walk under the ocean as manta rays and other fish swim over your head! Another must see place for visitors! Don't miss it!

This is not the biggest or best aquarium I have ever been too but we kept passing it so we decided to at least give it a visit! Holy expensive we paid...

The place has plenty of parking, easy to find. Staff are friendly, average price for admission. There is nice signage to follow. The flow of the aquarium is outstanding, it was easy to navigate to look at everything. Displays were nicely put together with plenty of information for each display. The tunnel is amazing! The turtle exhibit was my favorite.

It's been years since we've been at the Aquarium. Back then, ticket prices were over $35 for residents and exhibits were the same. Hard pass when you're...

Beautiful aquarium. Highly engaging and fantastic learning environment for children. Families will have a blast. Staff is very friendly and eager to share knowledge. 3D humpback whale theater is spectacular. Cute scavenger hunt for kids to go in throughout the facility. Very well thought out. Only downside is cafe food is subpar.

Great aquarium! Awesome 3d sphere show with humpback whales. Cool to see their conservation efforts, watched the green turtle presentation (they receive 6 turtle babies and raise them up to 2 years of age before releasing them in the wild to increase baby survival rates) and coral restoration. Also the restaurant on site has awesome happy hour deals.

It's not the largest aquarIum in the world and it's exhibits are mind blowing by any means. Most of their exhibits are pretty dull and dated - but the...

Awesome place to see all the sea life you missed while snorkeling. An abundance of sharks and sea turtles. The new humpback whale 3D movie was great and the seats in the theater reclined to make for a great place to sit back and relax. I also enjoyed learning more about Maui's history, especially what went on during World War II on the nearby island of Kaho'olawe. Very interesting place to visit. Definitely recommend checking it out.

Not the largest Aquarium out there, but jam packed with unique fish and activities. The 3d movie is well done and at least while we were there, the fish were very active and we were able to see everything, and the underwater tunnel was captivating. Nothing was hiding or out of site. Parking is expansive and was far from filled when we went during the week. Can easily take up 3 or more hours of your day.

It was a great visit here with my youngest of my adult sons and spent several hours here and enjoyed all the displays and presentations. Especially nice was the 3D show in the planetarium on humpback whales. We loved the giant tunnel that goes through one of the main tanks and had a good time watching the sea turtle's get fed pieces of cut up green peppers. This is the largest facility of it's kind in Hawaii and should be added to the must do list when visiting Maui!
