The Maui Sunriders Haleakala Express Tour is an unguided Bike the Volcano tour. This tour does not go into the National Park, rather it starts you at approximately 7,000 feet on the side of Haleakala volcano.  Your ride begins at the staging area just outside the park entrance. This Maui Sunriders Haleakala Express tour is for those who wish to experience a bike ride down Haleakala without a tour guide and have no desire to see the crater. It’s the perfect open-air upcountry tour through lavender fields, ranches, and small towns like Makawao. The Maui Sunriders Haleakala Express tour is a great value as some of the sunrise tours can be as much as $150 per person. You’ll meet at Maui Sunriders bike shop in Paia on the north shore. You can ride 28 miles downhill to Paia from the park entrance. Stop where you like for however long you desire. Explore the Lavender Farm in Kula or shop in Makawao. There are several places along the way to have lunch, or you can wait until you reach Paia. There are photo opportunities at almost every turn in the road with sweeping vista of the slopes of Haleakala or the coast below.

Favorite thing to do on Maui! Nothing more adventurous and exhilarating than biking down the side of a volcano on an island with views of the ocean. The guides were friendly and knowledgeable and Expressed a big emphasis on safety. The equipment was clean and looked well taken care of. The last thing I want to do on vacation is wake up at 2am to see a sunrise, especially if it isn't always a guarantee and can be crowded. I am happy I was able to wake up at a normal time meeting at 9 to start the tour. We got to enjoy the beautiful downhill sharing the road at our own pace. I enjoyed being able to stop when and where I wanted. This Ride is super fun and I highly recommend!

Thank you Maui Sunriders for this amazing experience. We had the time of our lives. My boyfriend and I are avid bike riders in the city we live in and we had no problem going down a mountain. Though it was fast at times the brakes on the bikes were perfectly in tune to help slow you down to your comfort level. Yes the helmets are big but they are super comfy and you feel a lot safer wearing it, trust me. We loved the ride up to our drop off point because we had an amazing guide that told us all about the area, the history and even the plants. We decided to stop at a few places along the way because why not if the weather is perfect? We went in December and the weather was cool in the morning and warm by the afternoon. I suggest clothing with a little stretch and layers. You can always throw them in the backpack they provide if you warm up. Again, the ride down was amazing and something I will never forget. I would 100% do this again.

All fun til somebody gets hurt... or killed. I’ll give the info they don’t provide. Maui is not a friendly or safe place to ride bicycles. These bicycle companies use the same ol bikes all year without proper inspections, people get hurt all the time and some even need to be flown to Oahu for life threatening and life changing injuries. I’m guessing the staff is trained to immediately contact 9-1-1 even with simple injuries which overloads the police/fire/EMS system. They should be proving rides to the hospital and nearby clinics instead of the easy solution on calling 9-1-1. I hope these companies step up and give proper service to their customers by giving them serious warnings of the dangers on riding on Maui. The roads are not safe to ride bicycles and the large groups create traffic jams.
