Maui Sunriders – Haleakala Express Tour
$89.00 BOOK NOW
The Maui Sunriders Haleakala Express Tour is an unguided Bike the Volcano tour. This tour does not go into the National Park, rather it starts you at approximately 7,000 feet on the side of Haleakala volcano. Your ride begins at the staging area just outside the park entrance. This Maui Sunriders Haleakala Express tour is for those who wish to experience a bike ride down Haleakala without a tour guide and have no desire to see the crater. It’s the perfect open-air upcountry tour through lavender fields, ranches, and small towns like Makawao. The Maui Sunriders Haleakala Express tour is a great value as some of the sunrise tours can be as much as $150 per person. You’ll meet at Maui Sunriders bike shop in Paia on the north shore. You can ride 28 miles downhill to Paia from the park entrance. Stop where you like for however long you desire. Explore the Lavender Farm in Kula or shop in Makawao. There are several places along the way to have lunch, or you can wait until you reach Paia. There are photo opportunities at almost every turn in the road with sweeping vista of the slopes of Haleakala or the coast below.
Maui Sunriders provides Trek mountain bikes, Bell downhill helmets, Columbia rain & wind gear, gloves and a backpack which includes a lock and weather proof road map with road safety rules.

A must do when you visit Maui - highly recommended. This was the highlight of our trip - the best part! The price is extremely affordable and it will be a memory that will last a lifetime. The tour started off right with the ride up. Adam, our guide was very informative with facts about Hawaii. He kept us entertained with stories and answered any questions we had. He also gave us some tips and advice on places and things to check out on our ride. The view once we got to the top was amazing and it never stopped. The entire way down was beautiful. We stopped at local fruit stands, a restaurant, said hi to the friendly horses, and did this all at our own pace. We were lucky enough to have Jeff and Crystal with us for the day. They made sure we were safe, comfortable at moving at our own pace and gave us so much information about the island. We will 100% be back!
Remy and Adam were terrific hosts! Remy is a great character and made sure everyone was set up for the best experience. Adam had a lot of good information about the area along the way up.
It's fun to take those sharp curves at the top on a gorgeous, dry and sunny morning with no traffic. Fixed gear was perfect for the ride, only needed to start moving, and the couple of little hills.
Also, really surprised how relaxed everything was. No guide pushing or pulling, just whatever pace you like. I'm sure I'll do this again with same company!
Great experience! My wife and I rented brand-new road bikes from Maui Sunriders. Since we weren't in tip-top cycling condition, the co-owner, Crystal, recommended we take their guided van tour up to Haleakala National Park entrance at 6,500' elevation and then jump on our bikes for the ascent to the top at 10,000'. Thanks to her great advice, we got to experience an epic ride climbing the many switchbacks through the otherworldly volcanic terrain. The views were spectacular. But make sure to check the weather conditions, since high winds can make the ride into a truly scary adventure. We highly recommend this company for quality equipment, knowledgeable advice, and friendly service.
One of the best things we did on our vacation was booking a tour with Maui Sun Riders! My wife was a bit intimidated at first but ended up loving every minute of it. There is nothing to be scared of unless you don't like amazing views, awesome people and a really good time. I would highly recommend this to just about anyone! I'd do this again in a heartbeat!
We opted for the self-guided tour leaving at 9am. The van drive up wasn't overly crowded, and was nice and slow, for anyone concerned about motion sickness driving up a mountain via switchbacks.
Rafael was a great laid back guide who talked us through many points of interest, and restaurant suggestions on the way up. At ~6,500 feet elevation, just before the National Park, we were unloaded, and on our bikes in 5 minutes. We were able to take our time, and stop whenever we wanted to enjoy the view and have a leisurely breakfast.
One note about parking in their lot, there's a box for cash, or you can pay by app. The app charges $65 for the day, whereas the box has posted rates of $10, so be careful what you pick.
