Haleakala Bike Company Tours

Enjoy the breathtaking Sunrise on Haleakala, then bike down the volcano experiencing all the wonders of upcountry Maui from your bike. Or sleep in and take a later tour of the volcano and get the same experience biking down the volcano. The third option is to just do the bike ride which is perfect for those who want a quick upcountry tour. There is only one option with Haleakala Bike Company for a Maui sunrise bike tour. The option is to drive to the baseyard in Haiku. Some members of the group may want to be included in the activity but have no desire to ride a bike down Haleakala. The van tour option is a perfect solution for that type of situation. The rates are also much cheaper than the van option with other companies. This feature separate them from everyone else. They are more family friendly.

Great biking - exhilarating and fun. Guide was sweet but his stories on the way up the mountain took valuable time and he was hard to hear and understand (the accent and he spoke so fast). I would have appreciated more info about biking, being aware of area, site seeing. We met at the store at 9, but didn’t get on the bikes til 12:30. We wanted to make stops but didn’t have enough time to do much. I recommend this but just hope for an efficient guide.

Yet another accident. These tours use very busy back roads that are NOT suitable for hordes of bikes from multiple tour companies multiple times a day. Today, a 13 year old on this tour swerved into a truck. Enough. He came out okay, but what will it take for people to wake up and realize you’d hate this in your school commute. We are trying to take our kids to school safely, get to work, get groceries. Bikes on these tours are swerving all over the road, stopping and blocking the road, you name it. Unless you are a very experienced cyclist who knows how to ride a straight line at 35mph, who knows to stay very far right, please don’t do this tour. There have been way too many close calls, injuries, and deaths. Residents are absolutely fed up with these tours as well, yet we smile and carefully do what we can to avoid hitting these bikes. Nothing we can do when a bike swerved suddenly into US. Please please please question doing this!!!! It’s dangerous and highly disruptive to Upcountry life.

We had no idea what to expect, but I really wanted to ride straight down the volcano. We skipped the sunrise ride, as we're not early risers (vacation, anyone?) The staff was very warm and welcoming. The ride up was unexpectedly fun with Keemo (spelling?) as our guide. He was funny, knowledgeable and answered all of our questions, took fun/great photos of each guest and made it super fun. This guy deserves a raise and great tips.

The ride down is NOT scary, unless you're a small child. There's almost no need to pedal, but it's not that steep. We got some amazing photos and drone shots on the way down. We only brought water and a few snacks. No need for a giant backpack. Save the space and weight. Since we waited till late morning, it was HOT. But the wind from riding down kept us cool. There are a couple nice stops for lunch on the way. It went way faster than expected and was one of the highlights of our stay in Maui.

Great experience! We chose the self-guided bike tour. Our guide Bill and driver Martin were fun and shared lots of knowledge about several facts (history, politics, nature etc), which made the way up the mountain in the van entertaining! The sunrise is beautiful and you will enjoy it even more if you bring lots of warm clothing and blankets. The bike down is also pretty and not too difficult!

Amazing experience until we returned to the bike shop, where the employees insisted we had only paid for the van tour (less expensive), despite the morning guides having our names on the self guided tour list. We then met another couple who was told the same. We all ended up paying more after the ride was over. Great experience and knowledgeable guide, but make sure you got everything printed off ahead of time!
