A Unique Luau Experience on Maui at the Grand Wailea Luau
Pele, the goddess of fire is described as one who came prior to the arrival of the Polynesians, paving the way with her lava so there would be land sufficient for the Hawaiians to live. Lilinoe, the goddess of the mist was said to linger above sending cool rains to nourish the lands. The mermaid of Maui, Kananaka, swooned near the surfers and tried to capture them for fun. The dance of Naulu is a love story – the goddess of the clouds could only visit her lover Kanaloa in the uplands that embraced the clouds of Ulupalakua. These stories of ancient Hawaii create an exciting evening of traditional chant and hula that bring the history of Maui to life. Enjoy an evening of magical enchantment at Honua’ula and discover the culture, history, and legends Hawaii.

We were visiting Hawaii for the first time and my Wife wanted to go to a Luau. This was at a really beautiful venue. The staff were very nice and after getting seated and drinks we were able to see an absolutely beautiful sunset.
The band was excellent, with songs from Hawaii as well as others. When we got to go up to the buffet tables I was somewhat disappointed in the food. It reminded me of a typical hotel buffet for the holidays or a convention. Nothing was really bad, but nothing was that great either.
The show however was first class. Great singing, dancing and twirling of flaming items. We all enjoyed the show and it made for a fun and entertaining evening.
The food was amazing and the staff friendly. I wish we would have not been facing the massive hotel for the show kind of kills the atmosphere and the couple of sleepy songs kind of made me sleepy but it was nice. I liked the celebration of taking the pig out of the ground.
We got the discount standard passes from Costco.
We liked that it was something that we had not been to before and was "cool" according to my 14 year old son.
Food quality was above average in our opinion though we don't really have a lot to compare to but in general it was above average. The open bar was somewhat limited but free liquor is always a good thing!
The setup was nice, though, I would have liked to have known that I didn't have to be there with the entire party to "check-in" to get a nice table assignment so, if you do go, and stay nearby nearby, have one person from your party get there about 30 minutes early, get your table assignment, then come back when the tables actually open.
Otherwise, enjoy Maui!
I personally thought the show was disappointing. It was an okay performance but after reading reviews, I was expecting more. The highlight was the singular fire dancer at the end. He did give a really good performance but that was 15 minutes of the show. I would not recommend this show and I will not return to this luau.
if you want more detail-
the food was really good. As someone who doesn’t eat pork, there was still plenty for me to eat. The chicken and rice were the highlights in my opinion. They also had poke, which I didn’t try but my husband and others at our table raved about it. The drinks were also very good, and trust me a few are needed for this.
I was a bit annoyed that at one point the narrator forgot her lines and just stopped talking mid-story and left the stage. I get that it’s embarrassing, and I feel for her, but the story is half the show!
Also, the brochure is quite misleading. There were no dancers on stilts. There was no 4-man knife fire dance. There were however 4 men putting out fires with their butts. That was pretty funny but not what’s advertised.
Basically everyone gave a good show but nothing was exceptional. Nobody seemed to really master their performance.
Top notch! The food and drinks were good and there's a decent show while you're eating. The show after dinner is where it's really at though. Great story telling and beautiful music.
I'd like to know the name of the song for the rain cloud over Haleakala, I may have had some sand in my eye during that part ;)
