Reef Dancer – 75 Minute Tour
The Reef Dancer is a glass-bottomed boat that gives you an intimate glimpse of the underwater world that is just off the leeward coast of Maui. Once the Reef Dancer arrives at the viewing area there are 3 scuba divers that descend out from the submarine. One feeds the marine life and draws so many fish around him that you can’t see him. Another diver has an underwater video recorder and films the hidden secrets beneath the rocks. There is a viewing screen inside the cabin and you can see what he is filming. The third diver does what has become known as the “creature feature” part of the adventure as he finds live specimens and neat stuff on the bottom and brings it up to the viewing windows for all to see. He then returns it back to where he found it (unharmed of course), and the entire journey is narrated so everyone knows what they are looking at.
Reef Dancer is probably the best Maui activity for families with younger children and something you should consider. If your children don’t meet the height requirement for Atlantis Submarine, as is a perfect choice. Seniors who have difficulty descending steep stairs may also want to consider Reef Dancer as the stairs are much easy to walk down.
It’s a semi-submersible, so it doesn’t dive under the water. It looks like a submarine and its painted yellow. The conning tower has a stairway that leads into the bowels of the submarine. They are not very steep. Inside windows surround the interior. They are rather large, which provides for ample viewing. There are not many seats below, so you have to stand. In the rear of the submarine is a television that records the entire experience from the outside. You can purchase the video if you like.
Reef Dancer motors out of Lahaina Harbor to Mala Wharf. There are 2 to 3 scuba divers who enter the water. One has a video recorder that displays on the inside television. Another diver cruises the bottom searching for interesting things to show you. He will bring whatever he finds to the windows for everyone to look at. Usually, it’s an octopus or some form of shell creature. I call it the creature feature.
The third diver feeds the fish to bring them into view. It’s amazing how the fish can smell or sense the food. One minute there is only the diver, with nothing around him and the next he is completely engulfed with fish. Your children will find this fascinating.
Let’s face it, attention spans for younger children are short. A 75-minute tour with some good entertainment is the perfect length of time for smaller kids. If you or your children have seen enough, or when the submarine begins its return to the harbor, you can walk up the stairs and enjoy the views of Lahaina while the submarine is motoring back to its berth.
Besides the video, the Reef Dancer has a photographer available when you check in for the event. They will take a family portrait and you can purchase it after the tour returns. They run about $20.00.
