Some people say that sunrise at Haleakala is an experience of a lifetime and with Polynesian Adventure Tours that experience is guaranteed to be comfortable and fun. Your morning begins with a hotel pick-up by a friendly driver in a spacious, comfortable van. You’ll be taken up the volcano before the start of the sunset to get the perfect position to watch and take pictures. You will hear the whispers of the wind, see the first faint rays of the morning sun as it edges ever more closely to sunrise. The clouds below turn like dyed sheets to a rainbow of colors from orange, red, gray and purple as the morning wakens in all its glory. That is sunrise on the Summit of Haleakala.

The vast expanse of windblown rock in Haleakala Crater is broken only by the towering cinder cones that reach for the sky. The entire crater floor is volcanic rock. Sliding Sands Trail, ever shifting with the breeze that has battered its rock for countless centuries into fine sand. Its gray, red and brown tones belong in another world, but they are here on earth hidden at the top of the world.

Your tour guide will share the history of Haleakala. Its history is rich in culture, scared to all Hawaiians, a place of worship, beauty, and know as the house of the sun.

Haleakala is the tallest free-standing mountain on earth. It rises above the enormous height of Mt. Everest a half a world away. Haleakala reaches over 30,000 feet above the sea floor towering into the heavens above. It’s no wonder that Hawaiian lore speaks of the demigod Maui lassoing the sun from its summit to bring eternal warmth to the Valley Isle.

The summit of Haleakala is the only place on earth that the silversword plant grows. It spikes out of the rocks like a sword, then blooms once every seven years.

Haleakala National Park is the most visited attraction on Maui. Sunrise is the busiest. Parking is limited and with the new restrictions on the number of vehicles allowed into the park at sunrise, there is no better way to witness sunrise than with a Maui tour group. The entrance has also doubled. That is another good reason to schedule your sunrise tour of Haleakala with Polynesian Adventure Tours. The admission is included. And you don’t have to spend the time looking for that open parking stall.

Mark Twain visited Haleakala. He said it was an experience he would never forget so majestic was the sunrise and wonders of the crater. When Mark Twain visited the park, he had to ride a horse, it took days. Now you can see the sunrise and be back before noon. Just in time to hit the beach!

I remember the first time I ever visited the summit of Haleakala for sunrise. It must have been in 1976. It was a long drive on a road that was dark and steep. The sunrise was priceless, the photos to last a lifetime, but I lost my camera and only have the memories of that first adventure to Haleakala.

Tip of the Day:
Dress warmly! It is strongly recommended that you dress in layers, or at least bring a warm coat. A hoodie would be perfect. You can remove the heavier clothing on the way down the mountain.

Our driver Sale was very professional and very friendly. Driving through the switchbacks we had nothing to fear, Sale was very experienced and safe. My favorite thing about Sale was that he was funny and knowledgeable about all of our surroundings. It amazed me that he could tell a story while being completely focused on driving the entire time. He was very caring too, reserving the front seats for the elderly when he didn’t have to. I would do the road to Hana again but only if Sale was team leading.

My family of 5 got up and ready at 2:30AM to see the sunrise at Haleakalā National Park. Preston was our guide and he made us feel comfortable from the moment we got on the bus. Preston used his experiences and humor to provide facts that kept my family engaged. Even though my kids were ready for the colder temperatures at the top of the crater, Preston provided them with additional layers to keep them comfortable. The Sunrise was magnificent. Preston continued providing interesting facts about the area on our way back which were easier to follow since we could now see!Thank you Preston and Polynesian Adventure Tours for giving my family memories we will never forget. Our guide, Hank, was excellent. He provided interesting historical information about Hawaii and the places we saw. He pointed out things for us to see or experience as we traveled and approached different areas. He was very personable and interjected humor which made the long day very enjoyable. The tour provided an easy way to see the spectacular scenery and to appreciate the significance of what we were seeing. There were ample stops for stretching our legs and walking through some parks and scenic areas. The food was good for a tour. We were very glad that we took this tour.

Wayne was fantastic! He brought such an energy and excitement to the tour. I’m amazed he had so much to give at 2:00 AM. I loved hearing all of the fun facts and learning about Maui’s history while riding with Wayne. The bus was very comfortable, and the ride was very smooth. We made several stops during the trip, so we had plenty of opportunities to get up and stretch our legs and to use the restroom. As many people know, the summit is indeed very cold. I would suggest wearing multiple layers and even bringing your hotel comforter if you feel so inclined (I wish I had brought mine). Watching the sunrise is such an uplifting experience. One of the park staff does a chant as it starts, and I would recommend leaning into the experience, because you’ll definitely feel something emotionally even if you aren’t very spiritual. It was a beautiful experience that I highly recommended. After descending back into Kahului, you’ll stop for breakfast, which was a nice little treat. From there, you’ll be driven back to your hotel where you can settle in for your afternoon nap.

We had a great time. Frank our driver was most helpful. We spent a lot for this and it wasn’t a disappointment. Everything worked out. The only incident we had was on our flight back the gate was changed but we found out in plenty of time. No fault of yours though. We took plenty of pictures and both of our phones were out when we returned. Love our visit to Pearl Harbor.

The road to Hana was a great way to spend the day. Tour guide (forgot her name...my bad) was knowledgeable and funny. She was able to point out many things we would never have seen on our own. Even saw wild goats and deer! I took a million pictures but I’m just including a few

The Road to Hana Van Tour was a very well-planned trip around the circumference of the base of Haleakala. Our driver, Larry, was an experienced knowledgeable guide. He shared with his 12 passengers the local flora, the volcanic landscape, the history of the area, legends, and wildlife. This full-day tour allowed time for bathroom breaks, photo opportunities, and lunch. Some of the stops included included historic villages, waterfalls, black-sand beaches. We ate lunch in Hana that was deliciously prepared by locals. The food was all locally grown and fresh. If you have time in your itinerary for a full day tour, you should definitely consider this beautiful trip. Having a skilled driver is a comfortable and safe way to travel an extremely narrow and curvy road that skirts some of America’s most beautiful coastline!

We bought the Road to Hana tour through this company. They pick you up from your hotel around 6am & then take you to a golf course to eat a light breakfast. Mostly consists of scones, muffins, fruit, juice, tea, & coffee. Lunch is included. I got the turkey sandwich. That was a pretty good sandwich 😋 anyways, we got Hank as our tour guide. Let me say that this man knows his stuff. We learned so much about the history of not just Maui but of the islands of Hawaii. He talked about everything from when Captain Cook first sailed here & put Hawaii on the map to what's happening now with the economy. It was great. I love a history lesson while I'm admiring the sights. He even stopped to let me pet a goat. I didn't pet the goat cause it ran away. This was an amazing tour. This road is dangerous though but Hank is a master at driving it. It's also absolutely stunning. So many waterfalls & lush green forests & beautiful beaches. Thank you Hank for truly making it a wonderful & unforgettable day ♥️
